I do not think it does.You would either have to open the AI in Adobe Illustrator and convert it from there (save as). Gimp reads the information inside an image to open it.Try opening the AI extension and see if Gimp recognizes it. No you can try to open them AS PDF or EPS in Gimp.You may not be able to though.
